Huey UH1
13th October 2008
I cannot tell you why but I love this helicopter. I don’t really have any link to it but it’s definitely one of my favorites. And since I haven’t build chopper yet I thought I’d try this one. I found it quite difficult to find this model in 1/48. That’s why I bought the Revell kit. It’s a bit of an understatement to say that I was disapointed when I opened the box. The quality of the kit is not very nice. I didn’t dry-fit anything yet but I don’t like the mould. The guns are utterly horrible. I haven’t made up my mind yet if I’ll build it this way. But enough ranting. The plan is to build a chopper that was used in the Vietnam War. It should look used and I am thinking of putting it in a diorama/base of the era. I’ve bought 1/48 crew figures that I will use in it, and I think I will depickt it on a Helipad.

Here’s the pic on the package of the crew that I’ve acquired. It’s the first time I’m going to use figures, I hope I will manage to paint them allright. It’s supposed to be an LRRP crew.

I did some dry fitting to see how bad it really is. To be honest it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

Here I’ve done some masking to paint the backseats.

One of the seats after airbrushing them. The will be weathered and I will add Etched Belts to them.

The cockpit area including the cabine after airbrushing. A lot of detail got lost on the floor part. I hope to be able to higlight them after some drybrushing.

Here’s the cockpit finished and some parts of the cabine. I am quite happy with the result of the weathering. I think it looks really good.
Major sanding and more putty needed. Sorry for the poor picture quality but I was in a hurry.
I’ve glued most of the smaller parts to the Huey. There’s not too many included in this Kit, which made the task considerably easier
Then I’ve added the remaining windshields to the canopy. That fitting was less than poor, it required a lot of work, and it’s still not the way I’d like to see it once finished. I noticed that I need to spend a lot more time on dry fitting with cheaper kits.
This is the start of the base that I will use to display the Huey. The base will be done in two parts. The lower part that you can see in the picture, and the helipad itself.
After a lot of thinking and research I’ve opted to simulate a concrete landing pad. I’ve made some “damage” to the “concrete”. The rest will be done via Airbrush and Shading.
Here’s the access ramp for the Pad. The same as for the base, post airbrushing work will be needed here. Quite a lot I think.
I guess when you leave a Model-Kit untouched for that long you’re bound to run into trouble. When I masked off the Windshield, it loosened itself a bit and fell back a bit. I’ll leave it like that for the moment. I’ll see what I can do later.
